Mastervolt en STEYR's propulsion system of the future

As a result of their ongoing partnership, leading Dutch-based electrical specialist MASTERVOLT and the Austrian specialist of Marine diesel engines STEYR MOTORS are proud to announce that the revolutionary series hybrid propulsion system based on the GPX will be presented at METS 2010.

Mastervolt has been at the forefront of pioneering work in this field, including close co-operation with the Austrian engine manufacturer Steyr.

Steyr has developed a highly efficient and compact Genset combining a unique, powerful diesel engine with a highly efficient PM (permanent magnet) generator to be integrated within the GPX models. The core of the Genset is a newly developed horizontal 2 cylinder parallel twin marine diesel engine with 25 kW based on the proven STEYR MOTORS M1 Monoblock design, and equipped with a STEYR MOTORS patented mass balancing system.

Talks are in progress with yacht builders for them to become potential field testing partners, because the application of the GPX technology results in the ideal propulsion and electric power system. With the benefits of electric propulsion, high torque at low speeds making maneuvering extremely easy, it enables you to cruise with just the sound of the water passing the hull. The usual drawback of limited range will not be part of this system, as the GPX will operate as a range extender.

The GPX is best described as a compact, intelligent power station, and features a small but powerful engine with generator, an inverter, a three-step battery charger and shore power hub all in one neat package. Much smaller and lighter than conventional generators, it supplies everything needed to run high-demand systems on a boat, and does so with automatic precision. By using energy from the batteries to support the smaller and highly efficient generator at peaks, the generator can be much smaller. By combining a variable speed generator with the highly efficient permanent magnet, the generator can be another 15% smaller at the same output levels. The built-in inverter produces perfect sine-wave output power for any onboard application, even the most sensitive, like electric cooking plates. Communicating with all the systems on board via a CAN-Bus network, it also intelligently manages any shore power feeds, and ensures that batteries of whatever type are replenished as quickly as possible.

Mastervolt will show an extension of the range of GPX models at METS. A GPX 26E will be on both the Mastervolt and Steyr stands.

Mastervolt and Ferretti Group sign a 'strategic supplier' contract

10 November, 2010 - Mastervolt, market leader in the supply of electrical power solutions to the international marine market, has signed a three year ‘strategic supplier’ contract with the Ferretti Group, a world leader in designing, building and marketing luxury motoryachts with a unique portfolio of some of the most prestigious and exclusive brands in the nautical world. This contract will extend the cooperation that started about eight years ago.

The agreement, which runs from Autumn 2010 until Autumn 2013, and which was initiated by Mastervolt Italia, brings together two companies dedicated to quality in all aspects of production.

Under the terms of this agreement, Mastervolt will supply equipment for the all Ferretti Group brands, including Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft, CRN and Ferretti Custom Line.

New staff appointments and a new website

The appointment of a new Brand Manager, a Sales Manager for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), and a Sales Manager for the Asia/Pacific region, as well as the launch of a ‘modern look’ updated and upgraded website will all contribute towards strengthening and confirming Mastervolt’s position as the world’s leading manufacturer of power electronics systems.

Newly appointed Brand Manager, Laura Willems, who has a background in the marketing of fast moving consumer goods, comes to Mastervolt from Perfetti van Melle where she spent the last five years successfully building that company’s Mentos and Smint brands in the UK. Now a resident of Amsterdam, Laura will work to strengthen Mastervolt’s worldwide brand image. She will also be taking a close look at improving the information provided by Mastervolt’s brochures, developing its presence at exhibitions and raising its online profile via the new website. In addition, Laura will work closely with Mastervolt’s sales team, providing feedback and input for the company’s research and development department.

The new Sales Manager for EMEA is 42-year old Peter van Wijk, who joins Mastervolt with career experience of worldwide support and management in advanced technology sectors. After 16 years with his previous company, Peter brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help to grow Mastervolt’s sales within the EMEA marketplace.

The third new appointment at Mastervolt is that of Erik van Wilsum as Sales Manager Asia/Pacific for all products and systems in both the marine and automotive markets. A keen sailor, Erik, who is 44 years old, will be dealing with Mastervolt’s partners, distributors and OEMs in the Asia/Pacific region. He joins Mastervolt from Terberg Special Products, which is an international leader in custom made trucks. Erik’s time there followed a career in the medical world. Now he will be based in Amsterdam, but will be travelling frequently for the company.

Exciting changes and developments have resulted in the launch of Mastervolt’s new look online presence at www.mastervolt.com where the company’s global trading is emphasised by the availability of information in six languages with further languages being introduced on the site until all the major languages are included – some 20 in all.

Despite an already strong website, Mastervolt has listened to feedback provided by its customers and has broadened the range of useful product and system information available on its site under the main sector headings of marine, automotive and solar technologies. Within these categories the website provides an introductory overview of the sector, then more detailed information on suggested systems for all levels of electrical demand, as well as data on individual products – and it’s all accessed through clear drop-down menus with the whole website readily available in German, English, French, Italian, Dutch or Spanish.
